Leander ISD 2020-2021 Launch to Learning

Virtual Learning in Leander ISD

Everything looks a lot different this year – including going back to school. Leander ISD schools begin August 13, with the first three weeks of the 2020-21 school year at home in a 100% Virtual Empowered Learning program. To help parents and students prepare for virtual learning in Leander ISD, a variety of resources have been made available on the Leander ISD website.

While the answer to the question “when does school start in Leander ISD” is August 13, there are other important dates that are worth noting as well.

Parents and guardians were required to inform the school district of their preference – in-person or virtual learning – by August 6th at 11:59 p.m. This choice affects how the student will attend school after the first three weeks of the year, beginning September 8th. In order to assign students and teachers to classrooms and minimize change, it was necessary for this choice to be selected early. Schools are working to connect with individual students who have not submitted a choice. Each school will have a process for updating selections at the grading period changes.

Creating a virtual learning environment

Parents looking for guidance on creating a virtual learning environment will be happy to know the Leander ISD administration office has published FAQs and resources on its website. Suggestions are tailored toward the child’s age and grade and include sample schedules, curriculum, and information regarding accessing technology.

In-Person Learning

For those who choose to have their students return to campus for School, it’s reassuring to know that Leander ISD is following all CDC and state guidelines and applying them to classroom health and safety requirements. Protocols will be adjusted in response to emergent needs and regulations.

Limiting visitors will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the risk of exposure to both staff and students. All campus approved visitors must complete a health screening and wear appropriate facial coverings before entering the building. Only parents and guardians that have completed screening will be allowed past the front office for scheduled appointments. Campuses will limit the number of visitors based on social distancing guidelines.

For students attending middle and high school, Leander ISD is committed to keeping in-person class sizes as small as possible. Maintaining equity for all students’ learning and minimizing change by being flexible for student choice and the changing conditions of the global pandemic.

On Sept. 8, we hopefully return to in-person learning for families who choose that for their student(s). Teachers will be leading classrooms with both in-person and virtual students following the same schedule.

When in-person learning resumes, teachers will continue to provide live, face-to-face instruction to both the students attending class in-person and the students choosing virtual learning in Leander ISD. Teachers will use high-quality virtual tools and strategies.

Both in-person and virtual students will engage with synchronous or live learning via their laptop and Google Classroom. Both groups of students will receive the same, rigorous, TEKS-aligned instruction
